A consortium of leading UK broadcasters and broadband providers have unveiled YouView, a free, internet-based television service ( IPTV) to compete with British Sky Broadcasting and Virgin Media.

Formerly known as Project Canvas, the venture has been created by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk & Arqiva and will launch in mid-2011 — with a YouView set-top box initially costing around £200.
